Care of Muslim Deceased’s Body

It is highly recommended to bury the deceased as soon as possible.

  1. Immediate Post-Death Handling

Upon death, the body of a Muslim individual should be treated with utmost respect and gentleness. It is important to ensure that the body is kept clean and fully covered with a plain, modest sheet at all times. The covering should be done immediately after death, except in cases of medical or legal necessity, with specific attention to maintaining the coverings over the private parts of the deceased. Please ensure the following procedures are carried out immediately after the death of a Muslim patient:

  • Gently close the mouth and eyes
  • Position the right hand over the left hand on the upper abdomen
  • Bring the feet together, tying them if possible
  • Position the face toward the Qibla (the direction of prayer for Muslims). If the nursing staff is unable to perform this task, then a family member should be contacted to do so
  1. Handling and Movement

Those handling or moving the body should be aware of the importance of maintaining the deceased’s dignity. Movements should be done gently, ensuring that the body remains covered and also that the body is not carelessly harmed during the process, transport, or storage.

  1. Organ Donation

If the deceased is an organ donor, it is crucial to contact the family to ensure that Islamic guidelines for organ donation are properly followed.

  1. Storage Before Burial

If the body needs to be stored before burial, we kindly ask that it be placed in a designated area where privacy can be maintained, ensuring the body remains covered at all times. Any refrigeration or storage arrangements should continue to respect this principle.

  1. Washing of the Body before Burial (Ghusl)

Islamic law requires that the body undergo a specific washing (Ghusl) and shrouding (Kafan) process before burial. This process is typically performed by trained members of the Muslim community of the same sex as the deceased, and the family or representatives from our mosque will coordinate with your facility to perform these rites as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours of death. Until this process can be performed, the body should not be subjected to any unnecessary procedures or examinations, unless legally required.

  1. Autopsy and Medical Examination

Autopsies and medical examinations should be avoided if possible, as they are not in line with Islamic teachings. We understand, however, that there are certain legal requirements, and in those cases, we ask that the body be handled with utmost respect and gentleness, and released for burial as soon as possible.

  1. Communication with the Family

It is also essential to ensure regular communication with the family of the deceased. They may have specific religious requests, and facilitating their wishes will help ensure that the religious rites are carried out in accordance with Islamic tradition.
